What is Phlebology?
Phlebology is the study of diseases of the veins including the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease. Vein disease afflicts 80 million Americans, and physicians who specialize in this field are called phlebologists. For many years European physicians led with more interest and innovation in the diagnosis and treatment of vein disease, but in recent years American physicians and surgeons dedicated to the treatment of patients with vein disease have made major contributions redounding to the benefit of patients suffering from vein problems. Much of this progress has been fostered by the American College of Phlebology encouraging physicians and surgeons to acquire specialized knowledge and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of vein diseases.
Treatments for Vein Disorders
Leg veins in the superficial venous system, i.e. the veins that course between the skin and the muscle layer and are involved with varicose veins, are amenable to minimally invasive procedures. These procedures cause the treated veins to immediately shut down and over time disappear. The procedures are done in-office under local anesthesia and may involve mild sedation or alternatively conscious sedation anesthesia. These treatments are fast and easy on the patient.
