Birmingham, AL – July 17, 2017 – The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® (IBLCE®) and International Lactation Consultant Association® (ILCA®) have recognized Brookwood Baptist Medical Center for excellence in lactation care for the 3rd consecutive 2-year cycle. This current recognition will last from 2017 – 2019.

Brookwood has received the global award in recognition of staffing professionals who hold the prestigious International Board Certified Lactation Consultant® certification and for providing a lactation program that is available 5-7 days a week for breastfeeding families.  In addition, the facility demonstrated that is has provided recent breastfeeding training for medical staff that care for new families, and have recently completed activities that help protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

“We are very proud to be recognized for this achievement,” said Amy Beard, VP of Women’s Services for Brookwood Baptist Health. “Our hospital is committed to providing exceptional service and support for new and experienced mothers in all stages of their care. We understand the importance of breastfeeding support and its health benefits for every mother and baby. All Brookwood women’s nursing staff receives advanced training to provide specialized breastfeeding support to assure both mother and baby receive the outstanding care they deserve.”

Brookwood’s team of skilled and knowledgeable IBCLC® lactation consultants provides a full spectrum of services to help mothers feel confident before, during and after delivery.  We offer breastfeeding education classes and breastfeeding support groups. To find out more about the lactation care provided at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, call the Lactation Center at 205.877.1978.

IBLCE certificates focus on preventive care, so they are available during pregnancy to assess the mother and provide information on how to successfully initiate breastfeeding. They continue that assistance after the baby is born by helping mothers overcome breastfeeding challenges, providing accurate information, and continuing to support them as their baby grows. They assist mothers returning to work or school, help mothers in more unusual situations such as breastfeeding more than one baby or nursing a sick or premature infant, and help train nursing staff to manage basic breastfeeding care.
