250Lisa2It is often said, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” but Lisa’s before and after photos will surely leave you speechless! Lisa McClendon, 53, is a patient of Dr. Cameron Askew, general and bariatric surgeon with Brookwood Baptist Medical Center. On April 18, 2018, she went into surgery at 354 pounds and has since lost over 200 pounds!

But, why is Lisa’s story one that is important to share during heart month?     Before Lisa’s surgery she was on 11 medications for various health conditions, but among that list were medicines for cholesterol and blood pressure, which are both indicators of heart health.

“I received excellent care with compassionate staff, who truly care about you after you have reached your goals. It is so good to know you are never alone through the process,” Lisa said.

250Lisa1Lisa also spoke about the relationship she has with Dr. Askew. She shared there were some risks in performing the surgery due to her size, but Dr. Askew encouraged her and felt confident enough to still perform the operation.

“She’s just so amazing, I love her!” Lisa said.  “She took a chance on me, so I don’t want to disappoint her.”

In addition to fighting childhood obesity, Lisa battled with alcohol abuse, which also lead to her weight gain. In relation to alcohol, she said, “I was able to quit by myself and have remained alcohol free for almost 2 years now based on the instructions, support, and guidance of Dr Askew.”

For those that may be considering weight loss surgery, Lisa’s advice is simple. “It’s not going to get any better, if you don’t do anything.”
