Summer is the best time to start being healthy with great weather and tons of healthy food at your fingertips. It’s also when kids are out of school and many people take time for vacation, making life feel less busy than normal.

So what can you do to stay healthy this summer? We asked Jessica Massey, one of Brookwood Baptist Health’s Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) in Talladega, to give us some tips.

  • Switch sodas and tea for water –

This summer, switch out those sugary drinks for water! This will aid in weight loss and also keep you better hydrated on those hot summer days. Hydration is very important and you should be drinking about 2 liters of water a day to stay hydrated. Increase this amount if you’re doing any strenuous activities, especially when outside in the Alabama heat.

  • Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock

We know, everyone’s heard it but we’ll say it again – wear sunscreen! A surprising amount of people ignore this recommendation and go outside without it, putting them at risk for painful sunburns and skin cancer. A history of repeated sunburn has been proven to put you at higher risk for skin cancer. Remember, whether it’s cloudy or sunny, hot or cool, you need to protect your skin.

  • Take advantage of summer foods-

Summer offers so many fresh and healthy eating options so take advantage of it! From corn to watermelon to strawberries, there are plenty of fresh, healthy foods that appeal to everyone. Many summer foods hold hidden benefits as well, such as antioxidant right blueberries and blackberries.

  • Always watch your kids and be aware of where they are at all times when they are around water.

It is important to talk to your kids about water safety to reduce the risk of injury. Even if there is a lifeguard on duty, be sure to keep an eye on them, especially if they are younger or not strong swimmers.

By following these simple tips, you will be well on your way to living not only a healthier summer, but a healthier life. Be sure to comment and let us know what your favorite summer health tip is!

And lastly....when you are at the beach, always watch out for sharks!
